Marlene Farcas, Romania: Highly Commended, Best Broadcast
Report
Marlene Farcas (Romanian Society of
Cancer) put her research grant towards a campaign on the
effects of smoking and lung cancer specifically targeted
towards young people. To tackle the problem at its core,
she worked with her team at the Romanian Society of Cancer
to inform high school students in eleven cities around
Romania about the dangers of smoking. The project involved
the production of posters and leaflets with titles such
as ‘You must choose…health
or cigarettes’. With the help of the research grant,
she has also been working in partnership with ART Fusion
Association in Bucharest to present interactive ‘shock-theatre’ designed
to further raise awareness of lung cancer.

Helle
Pappot, Charlotte Elberling Almasi, Barbara Malene Fischer,
Trine Juhler-Nøttrup & Halla Skuladottir,
Denmark: Winner, Best
Medical Article
In November 2006, Helle Pappot, Charlotte
Elberling Almasi, Barbara Malene Fischer, Trine Juhler-Nøttrup & Halla
Skuladottir won the Lung Cancer Journalism Award for Best
Medical Article with their article entitled “A better
Life with Lung Cancer”. The authors are all members
of FOLK (Focus on Lung Cancer), a group of young female
doctors with a specific interest in lung cancer research.
The group’s purpose is to raise the awareness of
lung cancer both amongst health personnel and the general
public.
The €7000 research grant has opened
a unique opportunity for FOLK, enabling the group to
start working with a publisher on a book about living
with lung cancer. The focus of the book is on how to
maintain or regain hope and dignity whilst having lung
cancer. It will be based on interviews with lung cancer
patients and their relatives and on personal experiences
from professionals working with lung cancer. It is also
meant to give an overview of all lung cancer related
matters and to serve as a reference book for patients
and relatives. The book will be published in November 2008.
